The Birth of a Successful Internet Business
by Shelley Lowery
Developing a professional website strategically designed to sell your products or services is one of the most important factors in determining your success. However, it is only the first step.
Before you begin the actual design process, you must first determine your overall strategy and design your website accordingly.
Internet marketers have basically two choices:
=> Design a content website that includes not only your products and services, but also information and resources that will be of interest to your target market.
=> Design a mini website that focuses on just one product or service, with no other content of any kind.
Although both types of sites can be effective, your success will ultimately depend on your site design and marketing strategies - both will play a very important role.
Content oriented sites are sites that provide visitors with content such as articles, tutorials, free ebooks and resources. This type of site attracts their target audience with incentives Their products and services are mentioned on the main page with a link to further information.
Content sites usually profit by educating their visitors. For example, a content site selling pet supplies might provide a basic tutorial to assist their visitors in learning how to groom a dog. They provide this tutorial completely free; however the main purpose for this tutorial is to educate their visitors. And in turn, plug their products.
When you provide your visitors with quality information that teaches and informs, you are not only gaining their trust in you by sharing your expertise, but you're also building your credibility, which is very important on the Internet.
Once you've gained your visitors' trust, they will be much more apt to purchase your products or services. However, above all else, you must never abuse their trust in you. You must be completely honest with your visitors and have a sincere desire to assist them. If your sole purpose in developing your own Internet business is for financial gain, your chance of success will be minimal.
The key to using this technique effectively is to provide content that targets your potential customer. This content is used to presell your visitors through education.
Mini-sites are different from content sites, as they don't provide any content. They usually contain one or two pages and completely focus on one product or service. Basically, the site is just a sales letter for the product.
A mini-site should be neatly designed in standard HTML with no Flash or fancy plug-ins and very few graphics. There should be no banners or outside links of any kind -- nothing that will distract your visitors' attention.
The sole purpose of a mini-site is to attract highly targeted traffic. The more targeted the better. For example, if you have a website that sells a number of products, a good mini-site would focus on one specific product instead of all of the products. You could create a mini-site for each product you offer.
No matter which type of site you design, keep in mind, your website is a direct reflection of you and your business. The appearance of your website is the most important factor in determining your website's value. If your site doesn't look professional or pleasing to the eyes at first glance, its perceived value will be low. The perceived value of your website will have a great impact on your success.
Not only must your website have a professional appearance, but it must also be specifically designed to sell. Everything within your website should have one specific purpose -- getting your visitors to take action.
Every part of your website must be strategically designed. From your overall design to your sales copy -- each will play a very important role.
Your website is the most important sales tool you have.
A professional website should possess all of the following:
Your Own Domain (www.yoursite.com)
Quality, Dependable Web Host
Customized Email Addresses:
- service@yoursite.com
- support@yoursite.com
- info@yoursite.com
- admin@yoursite.com
Target Your Potential Customers
Professional Appearance
Professional Looking Graphics
Quality Products/Services
Effective Sales Copy
Easy Ordering Process
Automated, Personalized Thank You Letters
Customer Database
Personalized Follow-up Letters
Opt-in List
Well Organized
Easy to Navigate
Load Quickly
Search Engine Optimized
Take your time and do your homework prior to designing your website. Look at the entire picture and plan each step very carefully. Your website is the storefront of your business. Make it shine.

Making Classified Ads Work
Are you having trouble coming up with that perfect classified ad? Here are some tips that will help you write a classified ad that sells.
You definitely want your ad to stand out from all of the others. But it's important not to leave out the information that really sells. Make sure you're thorough. Readers want to know all of the important facts about your product or service. If you don't include that information, they might pass right by your ad.
Don't use abbreviations unless it's necessary. An abbreviation you use might be perfectly clear to you, but someone else might have no idea what it means. How can they decide if they want to order your product or service if they don't know what it is you're selling?
Be honest in your ad. Some people exaggerate in their classified ads because they feel they get more of a response. But, what happens when a buyer finds out that they have been mislead? They definitely won't appreciate it and will take their business elsewhere. They will probably tell others about the horrible experience they had with you, and that will not be good for your business. Honesty really is the best policy.
Clearly state your price. The price of an item is probably one of the most important factors to classified ad readers. Ads that show the price are the ones that get results! Also, giving a price helps you to attract customers who are in your price range.
Remember to include your contact information. Be as accessible as possible. Include a telephone number, email, fax, and the hours you can be reached so customers can get in touch with you. Often a customer who can't get through to you the first time won't call again.

The Stupidman Family Screensaver Or Save The Turkeys
by Stupidman
The Stupidman Family Screensaver stars Tim the Tom, Skinny the Guinea and the two turkey hens. Also appearing are The Boss (Mrs. Stupidman), Greased Lightning, Grandma Boss and yours truly. We also have a guest appearance by the usually uncooperative and rarely seen Fashion Girl. Most of the humans were characters in the ebook, "The Internet Adventures Of Stupidman", http://www.stupidmanok.com/sales.htm (no L).
The screensaver tells a story about the near tragedy and ultimate rescue of our pet Rio Grande wild turkeys Dolores Pepper, the owner of DP Computer Products (I accused her of being a doctor but she denies it.), designed the screensaver while I provided the pictures. (Actually, Greased Lightning scanned the pictures and he and others took the pictures but I bought the film.)
I have been told this screensaver "is priceless" which is too bad as I was hoping I could sell it but from what I understand a screensaver might be a traffic generator. Somebody said, it might have been Dolores, there are over 30,000 searches every day for "screensaver". Our screensaver has text, a little audio (turkey gobbles) and is branded with urls for my website, newsletter and ebook. I also added an affiliate link to Dolores' website on the long shot I could pick up a commission.
Most of the screensavers are freeware and are picked up at the freeware sites which means I have to go through the trouble of meeting all of the nonunionized and arbitrary requirements of the top fifty locations. In fact this article is a Tucows.com requirement. (They said I had to have information about the software on my website. Most of the others just wanted the download url http://www.adminder.com/c.cgi?dpcproducts&stupid and a short description.) At least with this article and the fact that this is the 10th time I have used the word screensaver I should eventually get a decent ranking with the search engines for keyword screensaver (11).
I have gotten to the point where I run virus scan on just about anything. In case you are equally paranoid our screensaver (12) arrives zipped which allows you to save it and run your virus scan before letting it out of the bag.
I really don't think many people will be interested in trying to design an interesting or, as in my case, goofy screensaver (13) to generate traffic. I think the market for screensavers (14) is for smaller networks like clubs or families.
I have some friends that put ascots on their four Schnauzers. I could see them using a screensaver of 4 smartly dressed, yapping (might as well have a little audio) dogs and of course, sharing it with friends and family. How about making one for Grandma that has the kids performing martial arts or other sports? Homemade hunting or fishing screensavers? (No, I didn't lose count that was # 16.) Screensavers being used like vanity license plates or those boastful Christmas letters that are sent by neurotically successful people to less successful (and subsequently depressed) normal folks like me.
But I digress, if you like to dress your dogs, cats or grandchildren in funny costumes you might want to check out D. Pepper's services at:
